When Bumi Muwa first opened, it was a rare jewel in central Ubud: well-designed, great pool, great amenities. I made eight trips here, happily recommended it to everyone, and was excited to return. But this stay (sadly) will be my final. The decay has been gradual. Early signs were trivial and reasonable cost-savings - like local boutique soaps being replaced by wall-mounted dispensers. Easy to overlook. But the deterioration has compounded. Sheets that were once crisp now have tears and holes. Towels are greyed and frayed. Years of calcification stain the shower screens and bathroom windows. TVs have been removed. Repairs go unmade. Some of what’s changed isn’t the staff’s fault. The poolside oasis - a serene retreat for cooling off with a book for hours at a time - is now contested territory for gangs of aggressively emboldened macaques. On this visit a macaque stole a guest’s room key, and apparently found the idea of being chased by staff exciting enough to stage an X-rated rooftop performance. Meanwhile the breakfast pagoda, surrounded by lush tropical plants, now has its own simian-related complications. Everything that made this place special has slowly been lost - indoors and out. What remains is a husk of what once was - from a genuine jewel I looked forward to visiting, to a yardstick my partner uses as shorthand for disrepair and decay.

One of the best places to stay in Ubud, with very reasonable prices. The place is clean and well maintained, the staff are very helpful and friendly, and the surroundings are lush and peaceful. However, there is no car parking available, so it is more suitable for guests using motorcycles. Overall, I am satisfied and happy with my stay here :)
