24.06.11We really enjoyed our stay at Hongakuin. We received a really warm welcome on arrival. The place was very peaceful and the rooms nice, clean and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed morning prayers and found the food to be quite unique and very tasty.
24.05.20I went with my little boy. We have never slept so good!! For the little boy and I, everything about our stay so great! The simplicity of the room looking out to beautiful garden. The onsen is gift at the end of a cold day. I am familiar to Syojin ryori (monk meal) and I like it a lot!! But not a big hit with the little boy for obvious reason 😅
However, if you chose to come with your kid, that is not to worry about, the bus stop is just right outside and as well as within walking distance away to cute coffee shop, cafe and restaurant and supermarket.
Can’t comment on the fire/ meditation session in the morning, my little boy slept so well, I didn’t have the heart to wake him up for that. We ended joining fire ceremony at another temple where our friend stayed in.
I wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights. We are already planning to come back next year.
So if you want to experience a temple stay, highly recommend Hongakuin 💖💖
24.05.20I had a great overnight stay. The staff was accommodating to English speakers and the town was very peaceful. The morning prayer was very surreal and authentic

24.04.29Great location - access to key spots around Koyasan.
Morning prayers before breakfast was a nice experience. A good start to the day.
Staff were pleasant and friendly. Breakfast and dinner were served at 7.20 am and 6 pm respectively. Those who were not used to sitting cross-legged found it challenging during meal times. It was definitely a temple experience!
Bath time was 5 pm to 10 pm, and that’s it! Not used to not having a shower in the morning too …
Overall a pleasant stay.
