We stayed 3 nights in the hotel. The location is a bit remote, but the hotel offers free shuttle bus to closest train stations few times a day and it also allows you to make some day trips/hikes without taking a taxi. We did Samurai route different parts that the hotel recommended and those were interesting with beautiful landscapes. The staff was extremely polite and helpful. The hotel is clean, but could use some modernization. The lovely onsens were open 24h, so you can enjoy a bath any time. The food, especially dinner, was amazing in the hotel. We had a different 10 course dinner every night and each dish was tasty, fresh and beautifully presented. Highly recommended if you enjoy Japanese food.

On arrival my first thought was it looked very dated. However, it is such a lovely place with a serenity to it making you feel like you are staying at a retreat. Both public and private baths are available. The outdoor private bath has views over the forest and river. The staff are so attentive and helpful and just lovely. Some decor and furnishing decisions appear a bit random. It could easily be updated. However with everything else being so good you don’t seem to notice it too much. The food was very good. I would highly recommend this forest ryokan.
