You get what you pay for. A bit out of the way without a car. Area is beautiful but remote. Somebody went in my unlocked open door room on my day of check out and loosened the lid on my mayonnaise so that it would end up all over inside of my luggage. Luckily I noticed it before closing up my luggage. Who does that in Japan?

The owner suddenly closed the place down for some odd reason and last night only a few of us remained . Supposedly there was a maintenance due to unsanitary something perhaps. The owner is helpful and knowledgeable but don’t break any rule like forgetting to put away a dish in the kitchen or you will be on his bad side and he will avoid interacting with yiu. Private room are decent value but one fit on was not comfortable so just take a fit on off the top bunk and double up. Kitchen is one of the better I found in Yakushima or Kagoshima. There was an incident where I left my room door open and before checking out someone unscrewed my mayonnaise so it would have gone all over the luggage but I caught it. I met some interesting individuals while staying. A forecheck guy got lucky snd romanced a formal guest while the other guys failed to win her heart. Owner placed me in worse possible private room next to the sinks outside and light at night seeped in. Bring a decent eye mask. No need for earplugs though as it is quiet and everyone goes to bed around 10 pm Hostel dorm room is cramped but good value. Enjoy your days in Yakushima snd make good use of the daylight hours to take full advantage of the incredible nature. The island has healing peaceful energy. Especially deep in Yakasugiland 4 hour hike. Rent a car if you have limited time. 3-5 days minimum for this beautiful island in Kagoshima area Take slow ferry it’s much better than jetfoil ! Half the price snd yiu can get up and go stroll on deck for ocean views and ocean breeze. Over and out

Helpful manager. Other reviews are accurate. Having a rental car is helpful but not absolutely necessary. Bus stop just 5 minute walk to main road. Two beautiful waterfalls nearby and a botanical garden
