Mekong Charm Riverside

Summary: Avoid this hotel. They did not honor a confirmed, prepaid reservation and only informed me after I contacted them myself. I was moved to a significantly worse hotel and received little to no meaningful resolution. Full Review: I had a confirmed booking at Mekong Charm Riverside Hotel that I made well in advance, specifically choosing it for its riverside location and strong reviews. Unfortunately, this turned into one of the most frustrating travel experiences I’ve had. On the day of my arrival, I reached out to the hotel via WhatsApp to arrange airport transfer. Only then was I told that they were “overbooked” and could no longer accommodate my stay. There was no proactive communication whatsoever—had I not contacted them, I have no idea when (or if) they would have informed me. I arrived late at night after a long journey and had no choice but to accept the alternative hotel they arranged. The replacement property was clearly not comparable. It was not located on the Mekong riverside (which was the main reason I chose Mekong Charm), and the overall quality was significantly worse—poor soundproofing, inadequate curtains, questionable door security, faulty fixtures, and missing or subpar amenities. What made the situation even more concerning was that I checked online and saw Mekong Charm was still actively selling rooms for my exact dates at a much higher price. It’s hard not to feel like my confirmed booking was disregarded so they could resell rooms at a higher rate. I tried to resolve the situation through Agoda and even requested to be moved to a comparable hotel for the remainder of my stay, but this was not accommodated. As a result, I was stuck in a clearly inferior hotel for my entire trip. This experience caused unnecessary stress and significantly impacted my time in Luang Prabang. A confirmed booking should mean something, and the lack of communication, accountability, and basic customer service here was extremely disappointing. I would strongly recommend avoiding this hotel if you want reliability and peace of mind when traveling.
