26.04.03We stayed in japan style room with Tatami room sleeping on foutons, very comfortable. The room was spacious enough for two of us. Great onsen, dedicated person spoke English👍, great presentation of food particularly the dinner - we had halfboard option. Nice location - near the outdoor Sainokawara and the Yubatake.
26.04.03Hotel Spax Kusatsu is a prime example of why you shouldn't overlook traditional-leaning hotels for a high-value stay in one of Japan's most famous onsen towns. It offers a premium experience that rivals much more expensive ryokans, featuring its own excellent hot spring baths, a sauna, and even laundry facilities. The rooms are well-equipped with all the essentials—including yukatas and quality toiletries—ensuring you don’t have to cut any corners on comfort. Its location is a major win, situated just a short walk from Sainokawara Park and onsen , making it an ideal base for exploring the town. You get the full Kusatsu experience with great facilities and spacious rooms (with balcony) for a fraction of what you’d pay at the luxury resorts nearby.
25.10.21I chose this hotel during my visit to Kustasu Onsen, a top onsen destination in Japan, and I left with nothing but disappointment, anger, and disbelief. From a place that charges premium prices, I expected professionalism and respect. Instead, I encountered incompetence and outright rudeness.
During check-in, the staff gave me the wrong briefing about the hotel’s schedule, which caused me to miss the onsen soak that I had been looking forward to. This was one of the main reasons I booked the stay, so missing it due to their mistake was beyond frustrating.
When I confronted the hotel manager, I expected at least a sincere attempt to fix the situation—compensation, alternatives, or even a proper apology. Instead, I was told flatly that “nothing can be done”. No accountability, no solution, no ownership. Just a dismissive, empty “sorry” as if my time and experience meant nothing.
The worst moment came as I walked away—I overheard the manager shout “baka バカ”, a deeply insulting word. For a manager of a so-called reputable hotel to behave like that is absolutely disgraceful. This is happening in Japan. It shows a complete lack of hospitality, maturity, and basic respect toward guests.
This hotel ruined what was supposed to be an amazing stay. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Until they learn accountability, honesty, and simple respect, no traveler deserves to be treated this way.
