26.04.05What a beautiful property. Our one bedroom cabin was well appointed, clean and so relaxing. I haven't slept that well in a while! Additionally, the hosts are so accommodating and welcoming.
I urge you to make this your accommodation of choice when visiting Longreach.
26.03.06Saltbush Retreat isn't just a place to sleep—it's where the Outback decides to wink at you and say, "Yeah, I can do luxury too... but keep it weird."
Tucked right in Longreach, Queensland—basically staring across the road at the Qantas Founders Museum like it's judging your travel choices—this boutique spot somehow turns the red-dust heart of Australia into an unexpected velvet-lined hideaway. Forget cookie-cutter motels; here you've got choices that feel like chapters in an Outback fever dream:
- The **Homestead Stables** (4.5-star extravagance) channels "what if a stable boy won the lottery and hired an interior designer?"—rustic beams meet plush comforts, and that exclusive outdoor bath terrace becomes your personal sunset ritual zone. Picture soaking under a sky so big it hurts, sipping whatever sunset canapés they've conjured, while the day’s adventures (dinosaurs at the museum? stockman lore? existential staring at horizons?) slowly dissolve.
- The **Slab Huts** (4-star) keep the bath-terrace privilege but dial the rugged charm up just enough to remind you you're still in proper Outback country.
- And the **Outback Cabins** (3.5-star) prove families can crash here without anyone losing their minds—spacious, thoughtful, and still oozing that signature rustic-but-gorgeous vibe.
The whole place feels like someone took the textures of saltbush scrub, corrugated iron, and endless sky, then quietly whispered "but make it chic." Landscaped grounds that somehow stay tidy in red dirt country, a pool that looks like an oasis mirage you actually get to jump into, and those outdoor tubs that turn bath time into performance art under the stars.
It's quiet—proper quiet, the kind where you hear your own thoughts for once—and yet perfectly positioned for Longreach shenanigans: stroll to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, geek out at Qantas history, then retreat to your slice of civilised indulgence like nothing happened.
Guests rave it's a "jewel in the Outback," a "delightful surprise almost in the middle of nowhere," and honestly, they're underselling it. This is where Outback authenticity and boutique pampering have a secret love child—rustic charm that doesn't skimp on modern needs, history-soaked eccentricity wrapped in comfort, and a vibe that makes you feel like you've discovered something the rest of the world hasn't caught onto yet.
If you're road-tripping the red centre and want to feel like you've hacked the system—raw Australia meets sneaky luxury—Saltbush Retreat is the plot twist you didn't know you needed. Book the Stables if you can. Soak shamelessly. Tell no one. Or tell everyone. Either way, the Outback will never feel the same again.
25.09.18This a lovely property with a surprising range of accommodation options. It's great for self catering. The location is great. It's not in town, but close to the airport, car hire and the two main tourist attractions. The town shops are a 2 km walk away, via a dedicated pathway.
We stayed here at the beginning and end of our trip..
