25.05.08Globalization and mass tourism have eroded the authentic travel experience of yesteryear. A bland, international style has rendered cultural experiences that seem like add-on modules in a design firms computer software. Like a trip back in time, Bann Makok retains the sense of authentic adventure and discovery -- but with all the modern amenities. No international architectural/design firms or investment fund manager’s spreadsheet spoiled this place. This is the real deal.
Located on the estuary of a small stream, you feel surrounded by jungle. Sometime in the past this was probably a tiny, working fishing village. The conversion was an inspired act of love.
Bann Makok is the only hotel at the end of a short paved side road. Your first thought upon arrival is: “What did I get myself into?” A rickety boardwalk leads across the mangroves, onto a concrete walkway as if you’re entering that old fishing village. Then you take a turn and suddenly emerge into a oasis out of some 1950s movie. The open-air common areas (lounge/lobby and cafe) are tightly integrated with 8 or so bungalows, all connected by nicely finished boardwalks. The décor is an eclectic collection of 2nd hand sales, antique shops, and handmade handicrafts. Everything tastefully executed. Local vegetation grows through the gaps in the pier and is mixed with vessels and pots.
About 50m inland, out of site, there is a working pier which provides a link to civilization with about 6-12 boats passing daily: Fishing charters, snorkeling expeditions, supply boats, ferries to nearby resorts. Across the estuary, at the mouth of the estuary, is an upscale resort just out of sight from your dock. The sea is about 150m away and has its own secret white sand beach that can be easily reached by kayak or by foot along a short trail. Once you are there, it’s yours. Very private and as nice as many of the other Koh Kood beaches you see on YouTube.
Don’t think of taking a stroll to visit another restaurant. You are isolated. No worries: Bann Makok’s food is comparable to the best of most everything in the surrounding islands and at similar prices. If you do want to explore – other beaches, civilization, other restaurants -- they have a very adequate stable of scooters for rent.
