Santo Tomas

Great location in downtown San Jose. The building and facilities was constructed in the very early 1900s. The owner(s) have worked to maintain the original charm of the building. Bathrooms are modern though. The property is absolutely spotless. I don't know if they have parking. Wheelchair accessible with a lift. The staff from the moment I walked in were very friendly and helpful. Everyone spoke English that I interacted with. Front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. My regular hotel I have stayed at for 30 years closed for some reason so I discovered Santo by accident. For me it was a lucky find. Central Market is a easy and safe walk from the hotel (don't miss Central Market). There is a restaurant (Cafe Rojo) 300 feet from the hotel that is superb.... Vietnamese fusion....I suggest trying it out. I am confused a little why Santo receives a 3 star rating unless people are only seeking modern accomodations that frequently look like institutions. Enjoy a stay at a location that strives to maintain old Costa Rican charm. Rooms come with home cooked breakfasts.

Staff were wonderful. Nice and quiet room and stylishly done. They even let us keep our luggage after checking out. Close the attractions.

We hadn't yet stayed in San Jose, but decided that we would spend a couple of days there during our current trip to Costa Rica. I'm really glad I picked Hotel Santo Tomas as the place to stay. It's a beautiful hotel with several sitting areas, a pool, an excellent breakfast, and top notch staff. The owner has lived in Costa Rica for several decades, in several locations, and gave us excellent advice on travel throughout the country as well as a good place to buy coffee beans. During our next trip to Costa Rica, we will definitely stay at Hotel Santo Tomas a while longer.

Nice to see old buildings been saved and used. Hotel is in good condition, rooms are spacious. It's an old building, but rooms are enough up to date. Staff also really kind and helpful. Breakfast is good, like many hotels in Costa Rica, you can choose from 4 options and then serve you. Parking also great. Everything further was close to hotel.
