We stayed at The Royal Orchid for a week and overall had a good experience, quiet, comfortable, and in a nice seaside setting. The room was huge with a great sea view, but we didn’t get much use out of it as there’s a public walkway directly in front, so we mostly kept the curtains closed. The room itself was modern but quite sterile — very little decoration, no pictures or plants, so it felt a bit cold and echoey. The bed was comfy, though the pillows were lumpy, and the air-conditioning couldn’t be adjusted, which made the room a bit chilly at times. Sleep quality was still good overall. Check-in was quick and efficient, though not particularly warm. We were given plastic wristbands to wear all week to show we were hotel guests, which felt unnecessary and uncomfortable, especially since no one ever checked them!!! Breakfast was one of the highlights. The buffet had plenty of choice, and the dining area overlooks the sea, so we enjoyed having coffee and watching the sunrise each morning. The breakfast staff were friendly and very efficient. We didn’t use the sauna, but the pools were clean and peaceful, with plenty of space to relax. The location is convenient — about 15 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes to Funchal by taxi (around €12 with Uber). There are also plenty of great restaurants nearby, plus two supermarkets for anything you might need. Overall, The Royal Orchid is a solid mid-range option if you’re after a quiet, comfortable base with good facilities. It’s not particularly atmospheric or luxurious, but it’s clean, convenient, and does the basics well.

The studio was large & functional, with hob, fridge & microwave. The location is amazing, south facing over the ocean, but try to avoid lower floors near the pool; we were 2nd & people could still see into the room if we were near to the windows. The room temperature is set centrally, you can't vary it & sometimes the fan won't even come on as it clearly thinks the temp is within its settings; I've never seen this anywhere else. Even with the patio fully open it got very warm for us. Reception arranged for us to have a fan, which was very helpful. The room could be very noisy early in the morning, I couldn't figure out if it was the room above or air/water in the system. Reception had maintenance check it but to no avail. Breakfast was varied & plentiful, but there's one restaurant to serve 3 large hotels, & it can be a scrum. If you're going to snorkel or swim you'll need to be confident as there's only one access down steps or a ladder, the swell can be very strong & you're straight into deep water. Internet is erratic & quite slow, in fact this was the major drawback – it crashed for 3 whole days, meaning we couldn't book our excursions or communicate from the room. I suggested they get a hotspot in the reception area but no joy. I complained formally on day 3, then it suddenly came back. Nobody fed back to us about it. The staff were the main plus point here, reception were polite & helpful, getting our airport taxi & an excursion when the internet was down, & the bar staff were very cheerful & quick to serve. They had music every night, people were sometimes up dancing, sometimes just laid back easy listening. They had a Madeiran dancing troupe on Monday evening which was amazing – please publicise it!! I'd like to give 4*, but as this is a 4* class with pricing accordingly, the warmth, crashing internet & noise sadly mean I can't. Sort that out & it would be 4* or even 5*.
